Driver Update: Modem
Installing Your Modem
Modems are the gateway by which we access the vast expanse of information and entertainment that is the internet. For this reason, you might consider installing your modem properly to be a much higher priority than say, getting your printer or game devices to work.
The physical portion of installing a modem is fairly straightforward. First, you make sure that its power cable is connected and plugged in properly, both in the modem and into its power socket. The next step is to connect it both to your PC and to your phone or broadband line. This step isn’t necessary if you’re using a wireless type modem. Once that is all done, you need only fire up your PC to see if the modem has been detected as a new piece of hardware, and then, if necessary, install the drivers that come on the bundled CD.
Problems Associated with Modems
It can be pretty difficult to determine if the modem itself has failed in some way because when it does fail, it takes our internet connection along with it. So we first have to eliminate the internet service provider, poorly connected cables, and a host of other possible causes before you set the blame on the modem. If it were a hardware failure, it would be fairly obvious, simply because the various lights on the device would simply fail to light up. But hardware failures are rare these days, especially in modems, which have no moving parts and do not generate much heat.
So once again, a modem failure is often brought about by a software or driver problem. This means having to determine your modem’s manufacturer, and model number, and then going online to hunt down the proper driver, download it, and then install it yourself. A tiresome and tedious exercise at best, and a nightmare of unfruitful searching at worst.
